Texas to End Federal Unemployment Supplement June 26

Texas will no longer provide federal pandemic-related unemployment assistance after June 26.

The move comes as small businesses and other employers struggle to find workers, NFIB State Director Annie Spilman said.

"This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right one for Texas," Spilman said. "Federal assistance was absolutely necessary early in the pandemic when businesses were reducing hours and cutting jobs or closing altogether. Today, our economy is stronger, but job openings outnumber job applicants. Our hope is that ending the federal supplement early will encourage more people to reenter the workforce."

A record 48% of small business owners nationwide had openings they couldn’t fill in May, according to the latest NFIB Jobs Report. The federal benefit will expire nationwide in September.
